An analysis of play theme in the play therapy process of preschool child with attachment problems

Abstract

|
" This play therapy research involved a 3-year-old girl with peer relationship and social adjustment problems due to attachment issues. Using the Benedict (2001)’s ‘Preschool Children’s Common Play Themes’ system, ‘regression’, ‘attachment’, ‘family’ and ‘safety’ were seen revealed as prominent issues. Additionally, mother-child interaction initially improved through restoring internal stability and trust through ‘constancy’ and ‘protection’. In middle-stage I, as the mother’s physical contacts increased, the child showed themes of ‘neglect, abuse, self-punishment’, ‘self-nurturing’, and ‘roughhousing’. In middle-stage II, interactions with other adults increased, predominant themes which emerged were ‘neglect, abuse, self-punishment’, ‘nurturing’ and ‘doing-undoing’. In the end-stage, she showed increased proximity and attachment to her mother with ‘nurturing’, ‘boundary-setting’ and ‘fixing’ themes. This study dealt with the play themes of preschoolers’ related to attachment issues, changes, and perceived attachment by parents."
